How can people be so cruel and even stupid?

There’s a $2,500 reward for information leading to the conviction of those who shot two red-tailed hawks recently on South Whidbey.

Both hawks had to be euthanized because of their injuries.

With 2009 and the full impact of the “Great Recession” at their backs, Whidbey business owners are looking to the year with tempered optimism.

Last year, the bad news seemed to be everywhere as the worst recession in a generation worsened and banks became more careful about lending money.

“It was kind of an emotional roller-coaster for people,” Sharon Hart, executive director of the Island County Economic Development Council, said.

May 31, 2007, More money earmarked for Whidbey Island ferry studies

With our current ferry boats celebrating their 80th birthdays, another one million dollars is being set aside for another study on how to go about replacing them.

There is talk of relocating the Keystone ferry terminal, and larger ferry boats to carry 100 cars per passing.

May 26, 2007, 18 new EA-18G Growlers jets coming to Whidbey NAS

The House of Representatives has just approved a 1.3 billion dollar purchase of 18 EA-18G Growlers, to be sent to NAS Whidbey Island.

The new planes will replace the current fleet of radar jamming aircraft, currently being used.

May 26, 2007, 71 Year Old Barn Lost to Fire

The rustic barn, owned by Bob and Cheryl Engle, was a complete loss. Firefighters say the fact that the walls were filled with sawdust, caused the stubborn fire to burn for almost three hours.

The barn was located at the intersection of Hill and Engle roads. It was built in 1936, by Cheryl's father.
